 Cedar Key 2010

By Dave Lucas - Bradenton, Florida - USA

As usual the weather was perfect at Cedar Key. I tried to count the boats, maybe 75 to 100 but it's hard to tell cause they're all over the place.

Lucas Boatworks folks made a good showing, seven boats--, four sailboats and three kayaks. Roger was there with Lisa Marie in Miss Kate so I suppose you could say the museum was represented, good thing Lisa Marie was there or I wouldn't even mention him. Reesa and Patrick were there with the 20 foot kayak, it's a fantastic boat. This was the first outing for Stan's "Nancy China" and the big gaff sail from his melonseed was spectacular.

Stan Terryll built a "Nancy's China" with extreme modifications and a cat rig from his Cortez melon seed, goes really good.

The Bradenton bunch boats, melonseeds 15 and 20 and the 20 foot triple kayak.

Pet friendly Faraway Inn where we always stay and anchor off the beach.

Island Place where a lot of us stay. Boats anchored and tied to the building but right on the canal to the big public ramp.

Island Place, good grass around to put kayaks and canoes.

Dave Lucas and nephew Steven Worley on the beach at sunset. The weather is always perfect the first weekend in May.

Jim Enyart's Cortez melon #8 and Stan's Nancy China.

Boats on Atsena Otie Island, white sand and deep drop-off on the east side.

You can look at all of the boats and even borrow some to try.

Lots of old designs you've always heard about.

On the Island

On the Island

Always lots of Sea Pearls here.

On the Island

Peggy and Jay Bliss on the beach. Jay had the winning electric boat at St. Michaels, MD last year and tried it as a sailboat this time.

This is a Proa. Wes White ( Rob's son) had it back this year. This thing only sails on one tack and the sail must be "shunted" to change direction. No short tacking.

Proa shunting

Richard Thompson built these custom 16 foot kayaks for him and Jean Marie.

Our own Roger Allen and Lisa Marie in "Miss Kate" Cortez melon #5. He would like to sell her so he can finally have a reason to finish #1, the most beautiful one of all.

Sunset over our boats, we build the most beautiful boats here at the Boatworks and Happy Hour Club.

Tricia Marie

Two and a dog. Sam Geiger built this 20 foot kayak for Pat and Reesa Bogatz and I love it. I'm going to have him build one for me.

He could keep up with the melons and had lots of room to sleep in the cabin.

I told Peggy and Jay that I'd send their picture out to the whole world, here they are holding hands. Jay brought his electric boat converted to try a sail, inconclusive results. Here's a picture of how the island looked in 1888 when the pencil factory was in full operation, a hurricane in 1896 wiped it all out.

Pencil factory in 1888. The island of Atsena Otie key where we all go to hang out. In 1888 there was a huge pencil factory there that got wiped out with the hurricane of 1896.

The proa guys tell me that it's called "shunting" when they change direction on this proa, the sail has to stay on the same side all the time.

Lots of Sea Pearl's were here, some with training wheels. Beautiful sunsets. Howard tells me that the lovely "Tricia Marie" is for sale and can be had for $12,000. All her bugs have been worked out and with her big jib she's a winner. When those of you who were here get home send me a couple of your best pictures and I'll send them along.
