Tolman Skiff

Thanks for continuing to be the best boatbuilding site on the
net!
Here are some performance numbers for my Tolman Skiff. It's
22' and a few inches long, weighs about 1100 lbs, with a Honda
90 and Tohatsu 9.8 on the transom. These numbers were for a
lightly loaded boat with one kid, myself,
and two dogs on board. We also had both marine batteries and
12 gallons of fuel. The Tolman hull impresses me more each year
in versatility and economy. We trailer and launch for free on
a dirt ramp with a 2 WD truck. The boat gets remarkably good
fuel economy, is big, roomy, and safe in most conditions.
The tide was slack with a mild breeze so the numbers are good
within reason, probably +/- a tenth of so. For one, its hard
to stop on 3300, 3400, 3500 etc without a digital tachometer....
It also takes a few seconds for the boat to come up and level
off and the GPS to achieve steady state...
At idle, you cannot go any slower than 2.8 kts in gear... the
boat transitions at about 9 kts... but it isn't at all like
the steep transition you'd get in a deep vee heavy boat. There
is none of the mushing you'd find in say a Mako or similar.
Top end Wide Open Throttle was 5600 and we hit 29.6 kts...
I need a few more data points but this time I was zigging and
zagging for the camera to stay on film... (I sent the first
tape to Steve Dampier on fishyfish.com - since he's catering
to the Tolman Homebuilder market)
